The Rules, Plainly
Side and rear windows can be tinted up to 50% VLT — meaning at least 50% of visible light must still pass through.
The front windscreen must remain clear, with only a narrow strip permitted at the very top.
Enforcement is automatic. Smart cameras measure tint darkness without a manual stop — rules can be updated at any time, so always confirm the current limit before installing.
Medical exemptions exist. A letter or certificate from a licensed ophthalmologist, submitted to the RTA, can secure a special permit for darker film.
